The Indianapolis Colts enter the 2020 season with an exciting group of talent in the backfield behind arguably the best offensive line in the entire NFL. That combination is likely to spell trouble for opposing defenses.
With Marlon Mack returning on the final year of his rookie contract and second-round pick Jonathan Taylor joining the backfield following the most productive three-year career in college football history, the Colts are primed to have success in the running back room.
In their ranking of all 32 backfields, Pro Football Focus listed the Colts as the sixth-best unit, giving Indy plenty of praise for the talent they have in the room.
The days of using just one running back to carry the majority of the work are gone. The league itself is transforming into more of a committee mindset and that’s likely what is in store for the Colts, at least for 2020.
With such diverse talents, the Colts are going to spread the ball around in the backfield. The expectation is that Mack and Taylor will split the early-down work while seeing targets as check-down options in the passing game while Nyheim Hines will hold a role specifically as a pass-catcher and on third downs.
If he makes the roster, Jordan Wilkins will provide depth in the backfield in case something happens to either Mack or Taylor.
It will be an interesting season for the Colts, but they should be boasting one of the most explosive backfields in the entire NFL in 2020.
